Balmoral Group was created by Sir Jim Milne with a simple but powerful conviction, that business should be a force for good, leaving the world better than it found it. For over four decades, that principle has guided how we invest, the partnerships we form and the legacy we work to build.
We back businesses with strong fundamentals and meaningful growth potential. Organisations that share our ambition, values and long‑term thinking. Our role is to help them thrive by providing capital, strategic insight and the support needed to unlock opportunity.
The profits generated from our portfolio do not end with us. They support vital community and charitable initiatives led by the Milne Family Foundation and Friends of ANCHOR, ensuring our commercial success directly contributes to improving lives locally, nationally and internationally.

Our team is a diverse group of experienced professionals dedicated to helping businesses thrive with expertise in strategy, finance, operations and sustainability.

Sir James established Balmoral Group in 1980 with just four employees designing and manufacturing glass reinforced plastic products. Driven by a lifelong entrepreneurial spirit, he has grown the privately owned company into a global organisation employing approximately 800 people and providing design and manufacturing solutions to the subsea, renewable energy, civil and environmental engineering sectors.
A strong belief in giving back to the community has been a defining part of Sir James’s career. Alongside his business leadership, he has been deeply committed to charitable work and philanthropy. He is Chairman of the Friends of ANCHOR, a fundraising body supporting cancer care and research at Grampian University Hospitals NHS Trust, reflecting his long-standing dedication to improving local healthcare services.
Sir James is a member of Entrepreneurial Scotland, a Fellow of Prosper (formerly the Scottish Council for Development and Industry) and holds several honorary titles recognising his contributions to business, industry and society.
He was awarded the CBE in 1994, received an honorary doctorate from Aberdeen’s Robert Gordon University in 1999 and was made Burgess of Guild in the City of Aberdeen in 2004.
Sir James became Deputy Lieutenant of Aberdeen City in January 2007 and received a Degree Honoris Causa from the University of Aberdeen in 2008. In 2011, he was inducted into the Entrepreneurial Exchange’s Hall of Fame and, in 2013, was made Honorary Doctor of Business Administration by Edinburgh Napier University.
Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce granted him Hall of Fame entry in 2015, followed by the Press and Journal in 2016. He received the Entrepreneur of the Year award from Entrepreneurial Scotland in November 2016 and became an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland in 2018.
In 2019, Subsea UK presented him with an Outstanding Contribution to Industry accolade and, in the Queen’s Birthday 2022 Honours List, he was awarded the honour of Knight Bachelor for services to business and charity.
Jim’s interests include gardening, the Scottish countryside, field sports, football and Formula 1 racing.
